◊ Genealogy Help from the Butte-Silver Bow Archives

The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives provides extensive services to the genealogist to help research family ties to Butte and Silver Bow County. Many of the records can reveal family information. Inquiries for help researching genealogy are always welcome.

To Request Genealogy Assistance

Anyone with a curiosity about researching family roots is welcome to take advantage of the substantial resources at the Butte Archives. You may perform your own research at no charge, and assistance is provided if needed.

We provide research services for a fee of $30 per inquiry. The fee covers Archives staff time to research our major indexes and records for up to 3 names per inquiry (plus copy fees). The average cost of an inquiry is about $35.

If we are not able to locate any listings for your family names we will respond to your inquiry but we will not send a bill. Due to the large format of many of our original materials that discourage scanning, we do not provide them electronically.

To request research assistance, send a written letter to 17 West Quartz St., Butte, MT 59701.

Be sure to include:

  1. The name(s) of the individual(s) you would like us to research;
  2. The time frame you believe they lived in Butte (decades are fine for example: 1880-1995)
  3. Any pertinent information that may assist us with your research. For example, Milosevic Orlich emigrated from Montenegro in 1895 to America and worked as a smelterman in Butte in the 1900's. Or, Mary O' Reilly was a boarding house keeper in Butte and married John Kelly in the teens.
  4. Be sure to include your postal mailing address.

You can also fill out and submit an online contact form to request research assistance right now.
